According to Fray Valentín: “all the towns between Arlanzón and Arlanza used some of their payments to vineyards… The county family enjoyed vineyards and the Arlanza monks pampered them in the Lerma area, especially in the Santa Inés priory. Covarrubias praises his own wines, and the abbess demands from each neighbor of her jurisdiction, a well of wine ».
Until the middle of the 20th century, the vineyard was an important part of all the existing farms in the region. From that date, there was a strong rural exodus in the Arlanza region (as in other areas) due to the great industrial expansion that demanded abundant labor. This was absorbed from the agricultural areas that could not compete with the soils or the living conditions of the industrial areas.
In 1995 a group of wine enthusiasts decided to take the necessary actions to recover the Arlanza winemaking tradition. Their efforts are rewarded with the recognition by the Junta de Castilla y León of the mention “Vino de la Tierra Ribera del Arlanza”. From that moment on, work began to recover the splendor of the wine sector in the area. For this, the productions and elaborations are controlled at the same time that the products elaborated under the protection seal are made known. As a result of a job well done and a growing recognition by the consumer in 2007, the recognition of the Denominación de Origen ARLANZA was obtained.
